About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a PhD student position in Conducting Polymer Fibers for Wearable Electronics, based in the Müller Research Group at the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. This research group operates at the intersection of physical chemistry and materials science, focusing on organic semiconductors, polymer blends, and composites for advanced applications such as wearable electronics and energy technologies.
The project centers on understanding the mechanical and electrical properties of conjugated polymers and developing innovative fiber spinning processes to manufacture conducting polymer fibers. These fibers will be integrated into wearable devices, including fiber-based organic electrochemical transistors. The research will employ advanced characterization techniques such as tensile testing, dynamic mechanical analysis, nanoindentation, and atomic force microscopy to study the properties of (doped) conjugated polymers.
As a PhD student, you will conduct independent research, participate in doctoral-level courses, and collaborate closely with fellow PhD students, postdocs, and external academic and industrial partners both in Sweden and internationally. The position offers opportunities for travel and engagement with collaborators, fostering a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment. Approximately 10% of your time will be dedicated to departmental duties, primarily undergraduate teaching.
Eligibility requires a Master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, with solid experience in polymer processing and characterization, especially of solution-processed conjugated polymers. Strong proficiency in English and excellent collaboration skills are essential. Experience in organic electronics and/or fiber spinning is a significant merit.
The position is a full-time PhD employment contract for four years, extendable to 4.5 years with teaching duties. The starting salary is approximately 34,000 SEK (3,200 €) per month, and you will enjoy all employee benefits provided by Chalmers. The university is committed to equality and diversity, actively working to improve gender balance through initiatives such as the GENIE project.
To apply, prepare your application in English as PDF files, including a CV with references, personal letter, master’s thesis (or bachelor’s thesis if master’s not available), and attested copies of education and certificates. Use the application form provided on the Chalmers job portal; incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. The application deadline is 8 March 2026, but interviews will be conducted on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
For further information, contact Professor Christian Müller at [email protected].
Funding details
Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
