About this position
The Leibniz-Forschungsinstitut für Molekulare Pharmakologie (FMP) in Berlin is advertising two Ph.D. students in Biophysics/Structural Biology in the Research Unit Molecular Biophysics, headed by Prof. Adam Lange.
The project focuses on the structure, dynamics, and function of membrane proteins such as potassium channels and rhomboid proteases, as well as supramolecular assemblies. The research uses an integrated structural biology approach with a strong emphasis on solid-state NMR and cryo-EM. Doctoral researchers will have the opportunity to learn cell-free expression for membrane protein production and to gain hands-on experience with advanced structural methods, supported by exceptional on-campus infrastructure including a 1.2 GHz NMR spectrometer and a Titan Krios cryo-electron microscope.
The positions are based at a non-university research institute that is part of the Leibniz association and the Forschungsverbund Berlin e. V. The institute highlights a collaborative international environment, excellent facilities, and strong support for research. The appointment is initially limited to three years, with an expected start date in January 2027.
Applicants are encouraged from backgrounds in (bio)chemistry, (bio)physics, or related subjects, and should have a strong interest in structural biology. Previous experience with membrane protein expression and purification, NMR spectroscopy, or cryo-EM is not mandatory, but it would be an advantage. The advertisement also emphasizes equal opportunity and welcomes applications from disabled candidates and applicants from all backgrounds.
Funding is provided through a paid employment contract under the German public collective agreement (TVöD Bund), including standard social benefits, 30 days of vacation, an annual bonus, and a company pension plan via VBL. Applications should be submitted online via the FMP jobs page, with a concise research interest statement, CV, degree certificates, and contact information for two references. The final deadline is 2026-11-30.
