About this position

The University of Antwerp invites applications for a full-time PhD studentship within the BOF project: 'Wroeten naar de wortels van de natie? Archeologische musea, historisch bewustzijn en identiteiten in België (ca. 1860-1940)'. This research opportunity is based in the Department of Heritage Studies, Faculty of Design Sciences, and focuses on the historical development of three archaeological collections in Belgian museums (Brussels, Namur, and Antwerp). The project investigates which objects were collected, who led the collection formation, and how these collections were presented and contextualized. It further explores how archaeological collections were used to reinforce national, regional, or local identities and how they reflected shifts in the 19th and 20th-century museum world, including scientific advancement, democratization, and educational functions.

As a doctoral researcher, you will prepare and defend a PhD thesis in heritage studies and history under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Gerrit Verhoeven, Prof. Dr. Ulrike Müller, and Prof. Dr. Ilja Van Damme. You will publish scientific articles related to the project, work towards a monograph, and present your research at seminars, international conferences, and workshops. The position also includes a limited package of teaching and research support tasks within heritage studies and/or history.

The scholarship is offered for an initial period of 2 years, renewable for another 2 years upon positive evaluation. The monthly stipend is calculated according to the doctoral scholarship rates. Additional benefits include ecocheques, internet-connectivity allowance, bicycle allowance or full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs, and access to a wide range of training and credits via the Antwerp Doctoral School. The main workplace is campus Mutsaard, providing a dynamic and stimulating environment.

Applicants must hold a master's degree in heritage studies, (art) history, archaeology, or a relevant field, or obtain it by the appointment date. Excellent academic results (top 10% of study group) are required. Candidates must meet criteria for FWO Aspirantschap. Strong teaching and research competencies aligned with University of Antwerp's vision and policy are expected. Knowledge of 19th and 20th century museum history, archaeology, and nationalism is advantageous. Excellent command of Dutch and English, and good passive knowledge of French for reading sources is essential. Paleography skills are beneficial.

The application deadline is 16 July 2026. Apply online via the University of Antwerp application platform, completing the form and uploading a motivation letter, scientific CV, degree certificates, and a PDF of your master's thesis. Selection interviews will be held on 25 August 2026, and shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit a short research plan. For questions about the application process, contact [email protected]. For project-related queries, contact Dr. Gerrit Verhoeven at [email protected].
