About this position

The University of Fribourg’s Department of Art History and Archaeology is offering a postdoctoral position within the ERC Starting Grant project Imago Caeli. Visualizing the Constellations in Mesopotamian, Greek and Roman Art (Project 101303087), led by Fabio Spadini.

The position is focused on classical archaeology and history of art, with a particular emphasis on Roman visual culture, ancient celestial globes, and the iconography of astral myths. The successful researcher will study the Kugel and Mainz globes, Vesuvian wall paintings, Roman frescoes, mosaics, and related visual media, using an intervisual method that combines literary, iconographic, archaeological, and astronomical evidence.

The research aims to identify and analyse representations of constellations and astral myths in Roman art, reassess the dating and cultural significance of the Kugel globe, and compare iconographic schemes across different media. A further element of the project is the integration of results into Stellarium to support the digital reconstruction and visualization of the Roman sky.

The post is part-time (65%), with a duration of 44 months, starting on 1 April 2027. The position is based at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. The researcher will work closely with the principal investigator and the project team, and will present findings at conferences, seminars, and workshops in Fribourg and beyond.

Eligibility highlights include a PhD or equivalent in Archaeology or Art History, excellent English, good French, strong comparative and interdisciplinary research skills, and a strong background in Roman art and iconography. Applications are due by 20 December 2026 at 23:00 (Europe/Zurich).

To apply, candidates must submit a CV, a motivation letter, the PhD dissertation, and the final report of the Commission by email to [email protected].
