PhD opportunity in immunology and molecular biology at the Medical Research Council (Cambridge), Laboratory of Molecular Biology. The project, supervised by Dr Patrycja Kozic, asks whether perforin-2 (Mpeg1) forms pores in two orientations and how this ancient MACPF/CDC family protein is regulated during immune responses. The research focuses on perforin-2 function in dendritic cells and macrophages, especially its roles in attacking intravacuolar pathogens and enabling cytosolic antigen deliver...

About this position

[Fully-funded ARIES studentship for 3.5 years, including tuition fees, maintenance stipend (£20,780 per annum for 2025/26; 2026/27 rate TBC), and research costs.]

This fully-funded PhD studentship at the University of Plymouth investigates the biology and ecology of disease in seagrass, focusing on the pseudo-fungus Phytophthora gemini and its impact on the development of common eelgrass (Zostera marina). Seagrass meadows are vital marine ecosystems that support biodiversity, stabilize sediments, and sequester carbon, but are increasingly threatened by climate change, pollution, and disease. Recent research highlights the role of microbial pathogens, particularly Phytophthora gemini, in undermining restoration efforts by infecting eelgrass seeds and seedlings.

The project aims to address a critical knowledge gap in the biology and ecology of seagrass pathogens and their impact on restoration success, providing insights into disease mitigation strategies. The successful candidate will employ laboratory assays, microscopy, and molecular techniques such as qPCR and metabarcoding to characterize pathogen life cycles, host responses, and environmental tolerances. Fieldwork at selected coastal sites will assess natural infection dynamics and collect samples for analysis. Restoration trials will be designed to test seed treatments and planting strategies under controlled and semi-natural conditions.

Based at the Marine Biological Association (MBA) in Plymouth, with additional work at the University of Plymouth and the Ocean Conservation Trust, the student will benefit from interdisciplinary training in microbiology, marine ecology, plant pathology, molecular biology, and restoration science. The program emphasizes applied ecological research, experimental design, statistical analysis, and scientific communication. Opportunities include attending international conferences, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and engaging with stakeholders involved in seagrass restoration. The MBA offers a vibrant research environment with access to cutting-edge facilities and mentoring from experienced scientists.

Applicants should have a first or upper second class honours degree or a relevant Masters qualification in biology, marine biology, microbiology, environmental science, marine science, or a related discipline. Prior experience in microbiology, molecular techniques, microscopy, or fieldwork is advantageous but not essential. Candidates must meet the minimum English language requirements for the programme (IELTS Academic score of 6.5 with no less than 5.5 in each component test area or equivalent). The studentship is supported for 3.5 years and includes a stipend of £20,780 per annum (2025-26 rate; 2026-27 UKRI rate TBC), tuition fees, and research costs for eligible candidates.

Applications are open until 7 January 2026, with the studentship commencing on 1 October 2026. For informal discussions about the project, contact Professor Michael Cunliffe at [email protected]. For application details and to apply, visit the University of Plymouth ARIES Doctoral Training webpage and ensure all supporting documents are uploaded.
