PhD Studentship: Designing Synthetic Proteins for Sustainable Control of Fungal Plant Diseases
The University of Birmingham is offering a full-time PhD studentship in the United Kingdom through the Midlands Integrated Biosciences Training Partnership (MIBTP). The project combines plant pathology, fungal biology, plant immunity, computational protein design, and AI-based protein engineering.
Fungal pathogens manipulate plant hosts by secreting effector proteins that disable host defences. The project will use immune-suppressing effectors from the wheat pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici as targets for designing synthetic proteins. These proteins will either bind fungal effectors to inhibit their activity or be incorporated into plant immune receptors to create new pathogen-recognition capabilities.
The successful PhD researcher will learn computational protein design approaches, including RFdiffusion and BindCraft, and express fungal effectors and synthetic proteins in bacterial, yeast, and insect systems. Protein interactions will be characterised using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and microscale thermophoresis (MST), in collaboration with Prof. Andy Lovering’s laboratory. Plant-based assays will use Agrobacterium-mediated transient expression in Nicotiana benthamiana.
This funded studentship is supported by the BBSRC through MIBTP, in partnership with the University of Birmingham, University of Warwick, Aston University, Harper Adams University, Coventry University, and the University of Leicester. The application deadline is 23 November 2026. Informal enquiries can be directed to Dr Graeme Kettles at [email protected].
