About this position

This PhD project at the University of East Anglia focuses on the design optimisation of brushless doubly fed machines (BDFMs), an emerging electrical machine technology for offshore wind turbine generators.

BDFMs can operate with fractional-sized power converters and eliminate rotor brushes and slip rings. Their simplified gearbox systems, compared with high-speed generators, may reduce capital and operational costs while improving reliability and reducing maintenance requirements. These characteristics make the technology relevant to the continued development of offshore wind energy systems.

The research will investigate design strategies to improve the performance of BDFMs and address current technical limitations, including relatively low power density and power factor, high vibration levels, and complex magnetic-field behaviour. The project aims to help establish BDFMs as a competitive alternative to direct-drive and medium-speed permanent-magnet generators, supporting more cost-effective and reliable offshore wind turbine systems.

The work is situated within electrical engineering and renewable energy systems research, with an emphasis on electrical machine design, electromagnetic performance, generator optimisation and the engineering challenges of offshore wind power.
