About this position
The Advanced Power Engineering MSc at the University of Edinburgh is a two-year, full-time postgraduate programme based at the King's Buildings campus. It is designed for students who want advanced training in modern power engineering and the technologies shaping secure, efficient and sustainable energy systems.
The programme covers both traditional and renewable power sources, with core study in power systems, electrical machines and power conversion. Students develop advanced numerical, analytical and research methods while examining emerging areas including wind energy, offshore renewables, photovoltaics, energy storage, smart grids and the economics of power systems.
Year one combines taught courses, workshops, laboratory activities and group design projects. Students build a foundation in contemporary power engineering before progressing to advanced topics and selecting options aligned with their interests and career goals. Practical learning includes simulation, industry-approved software, specialist facilities and applying engineering theory to real-world energy challenges.
In the second year, each student completes a year-long research project and master's dissertation in close collaboration with University of Edinburgh academics. Projects address actual, industry-relevant power-engineering problems and provide experience in research, modelling, system analysis, scientific writing and evidence-based engineering decision-making.
The programme is connected to the School of Engineering's research environment and industry links. Its compulsory material engages with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly affordable and clean energy, industry and infrastructure, and climate action. Graduates can progress into roles across energy utilities, renewable energy, engineering and construction companies, governments, consultancies and academia, or continue to PhD-level study.

What's required
Applicants need a UK 2:1 degree or international equivalent in Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering. Applicants from different academic backgrounds may be considered, but should have passed at least two power-engineering-related courses, such as power electronics, power systems, electric machines, control engineering or renewable energy, with marks equivalent to a UK 2:1; relevant industrial experience may partially meet this requirement. Applicants must submit a personal statement demonstrating their understanding of power engineering and strong interest and commitment to the field. Applicants must also meet the English-language requirement, for example IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component, or an accepted equivalent.
