About this position
This PhD studentship investigates how the increasing replacement of human staff by artificial intelligence may create new forms of digital inequality. The project, Human contact as a costly premium: the consequences of new digital inequalities, examines what happens when access to human contact becomes a service that only some people can afford.
Working across the UK and Italy, the doctoral researcher will study whether unequal access to human interaction affects people’s satisfaction, sense of agency, and ability to retain important advice. The research focuses on high-stakes domains such as healthcare and finance, where people on lower incomes may be directed toward AI-mediated services because of cost rather than preference.
The project uses an interdisciplinary combination of large-scale surveys, experimental design, pre-registration, advanced statistical modelling, behavioural measures, physiological measures, and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). During the first year, the researcher will contribute to a major survey across the UK and Italy. In the second and third years, they will lead laboratory studies and collect fNIRS and behavioural data at research sites in both countries.
The work is based in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience within the School of Health and Medical Sciences at City St George’s, University of London. The student will be supervised by Dr Claudia Civai and will benefit from collaborations with London South Bank University and the University of Padua. The project provides an opportunity to build interdisciplinary expertise spanning behavioural science, social psychology, cognitive neuroscience, human-AI interaction, decision-making, and digital inequality.
Students will receive methodological training in fNIRS and quantitative research methods, together with opportunities to undertake research travel and participate in the wider doctoral research environment.
