About this position
The University of Birmingham is offering a full-time PhD studentship in the School of Biosciences investigating drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis using national genomic surveillance data and advanced machine learning.
This joint project with the UK Health Security Agency will analyse a national collection of drug-susceptible and drug-resistant M. tuberculosis genomes from England, together with enhanced surveillance records and epidemiological data. The research will characterise resistance across bacterial lineages, investigate genetic factors associated with resistance emergence, pathogenicity and heteroresistance, and address limitations in existing resistance catalogues.
The student will apply genome-wide association methods and explore genome and protein language models to improve prediction of resistance in rare and novel genotypes. The project provides training in microbial genomics, bioinformatics, applied machine learning, infectious disease biology and genomic surveillance.
Supervisors are Professor Nicholas Loman, Dr Esther Robinson and Dr Bede Constantinides. The studentship is available to UK students, with funding details not specified. The application deadline is 23 November 2026.
