About this position
The University of Birmingham is offering a PhD studentship in polymer chemistry, supramolecular chemistry and dynamic materials. Based in the Fielden group, the project investigates how osmotic pressure can initiate polymer breakdown and enable the controlled exchange of monomers between polymers.
The researcher will design reaction systems in which monomers diffuse away from parent polymers, study reversible depolymerisation under different conditions, and work with reaction media and catalysts including emulsions and polymer nanoparticles. Activities will include polymer synthesis and characterisation, nanoscale analysis, NMR and electron microscopy, with opportunities to collaborate on SAXS, SANS and microscopy.
The broader goal is to develop more sustainable, responsive plastics and dynamic materials whose composition and properties can be controlled or altered on demand. The project is suitable for candidates with a strong Master's degree in chemistry or a related field, particularly those with experience or interest in supramolecular, polymer or synthetic organic chemistry.
Enhanced support for training and travel is available through EPSRC, ERC and Royal Society funding. Applicants should contact Steve Fielden with a CV and covering letter describing their research interests. Although the listing displays 30 January 2027, the description states that applications should be made as soon as possible because the position will be filled when a suitable candidate is found.

What's required
Applicants should have obtained a strong Master's degree in chemistry or a related discipline. The project would suit motivated researchers with backgrounds in supramolecular, polymer or synthetic organic chemistry who are curious, enthusiastic and keen to experiment, think differently and develop independent research ideas. Applicants should contact Steve with a CV and covering letter outlining their research interests. Non-self-funded applicants who are not eligible for UK home fee status will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.
How to apply
Contact Steve Fielden by email in the first instance, attaching a CV and a covering letter outlining your research interests. Apply as soon as possible because the position may be filled once a suitable candidate is found.
