About this position
PhD Studentship: Postreproductive Maternal Care and the Evolution of Sex Differences in Lifespan at the University of East Anglia.
This project addresses a major question in evolutionary ecology: why do some animals live long after reproduction has ended, and whether postreproductive maternal care helps explain differences in lifespan between males and females. The study focuses on wild nematode species, especially Caenorhabditis kamaaina, where postreproductive females secrete a nutritive fluid consumed by larvae. The project will test the hypothesis that caring mothers, or the caring sex, evolve longer lifespans because postreproductive provisioning extends the period over which natural selection acts on survival.
You will work with an available living collection of wild nematode species to measure sex-specific survival, reproduction, and postreproductive maternal provisioning across phylogenetically diverse species. You will then use custom genetic tools developed in the lab to investigate the biological mechanisms linking postreproductive care and long life. The research combines experimental biology, evolutionary theory, genetics, molecular ecology, and comparative analysis.
Training includes experimental design, phylogenetic analysis, statistics, coding in R, scientific writing, and presentation skills. You will also receive multidisciplinary training in evolutionary ecology/biology and bio-gerontology, plus access to external training courses and in-house research discussion groups and journal clubs.
The studentship is funded through ARIES and subject to UKRI terms and conditions. Successful UKRI-eligible candidates receive full fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 p.a. for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). A limited number of places are available for international applicants, with the difference between home and international fees waived by the registering university, although relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered.
Applicants should be enthusiastic, highly motivated, and interested in evolution, ecology, or genetics. Applications must be submitted through the University of East Anglia postgraduate research application portal by 2026-12-16.

What's required
Applicants should be enthusiastic and highly motivated with a strong interest in evolution, ecology, or genetics. The project particularly suits candidates interested in experimental design, phylogenetic analysis, statistics, coding in R, molecular ecology, genetics, and scientific writing and presentation. UKRI eligibility criteria apply for full funding; a limited number of international studentships are available, but additional relocation and living costs are not covered.
How to apply
Apply through the University of East Anglia postgraduate research application portal. Submit your application by the deadline and ensure you meet ARIES/UKRI eligibility criteria if seeking full funding. Review the project details carefully before applying.
