PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in the School of Biological Sciences on Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance of Responses to Environmental Stress . This project investigates how environmental stress responses may be transmitted across generations through non-genetic / epigenetic inheritance . Using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model system, the research will examine whether key cellular stress responses can be inherited, whether this improves survival and fitness under stress...

About this position

[Fully funded studentship covering fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). Limited support for international applicants includes a waiver of the difference between home and international fees; relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered.]

PhD Studentship at the University of East Anglia in Transgenerational Epigenetic Inheritance of Responses to Environmental Stress.

This research project investigates how organisms respond to environmental stress and whether stress responses can be inherited across generations through non-genetic mechanisms. Using the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans, the project will test whether key cellular stress responses are transmitted from parents to offspring, whether that inheritance improves survival and fitness in stressful environments, and which molecular regulators control the process. A major component of the work will use scRNA-seq to define transcriptomic signatures associated with inherited stress responses.

The studentship is based at the University of East Anglia and offers training across experimental design, statistical analysis, bioinformatics, scientific writing, and presentation. The successful student will also build expertise in evolutionary biology, cell biology, and physiological techniques, while taking part in seminars, journal clubs, research discussion groups, external training courses, and conferences.

Funding information indicates that this is a fully funded ARIES studentship subject to UKRI terms and conditions. For eligible candidates, the award covers fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/27, and a research training and support grant (RTSG). A limited number of studentships are available for international applicants, with the home/international fee difference waived by the registering university, though relocation, visa, and health surcharge costs are not covered.

Applicants should have a strong interest in evolution, ecology, genetics, and stress response biology. This is a research-focused PhD opportunity for a motivated candidate interested in mechanistic biology, inheritance, and environmental adaptation. Applications should be submitted via the University of East Anglia postgraduate research application page before the deadline of 16 December 2026.
