PhD Studentship: Proportional Odds Model and Win Ratio in Clinical Trials Methodology University College London in United Kingdom

This PhD studentship at University College London, within the Institute of Clinical Trials and Methodology (ICTM), offers an exciting opportunity to advance statistical methodology for clinical trials. The project focuses on the proportional odds (PO) model and the win ratio, both of which are key tools for analyzing ordered categorical outcomes in clinical research. Recent methodological developments, including a novel “leave-one-out” approach for the PO model, have highlighted challenges in aligning statistical analysis with clinical priorities, especially when the PO assumption does not hold.

The studentship will address several important research questions, such as how to combine the PO model with clinical utility outcomes, how to test for qualitative departures from the PO assumption, and how to extend the leave-one-out method to better understand the win ratio’s implicit scoring. Additional aims include developing strategies to avoid arbitrary thresholds in the win ratio and applying these methods to both retrospective and prospective clinical trials. The research will involve re-analysis of case studies, simulation studies, and engagement with clinical and patient stakeholders to ensure that statistical methods reflect real-world priorities.

Supervision will be provided by Professor Ian White, an expert in clinical trial methodology, with additional input from experienced co-supervisors and collaborators, including John Gregson (LSHTM). The student will also have opportunities to present their work to the MRC CTU’s methodology panel, gaining valuable feedback from leading researchers in the field. No fieldwork or industry placements are planned, but the project will be closely integrated with ongoing methodological and applied research at UCL.

Applicants should have a strong background in statistics, mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline, and a keen interest in clinical trials and statistical methodology. Good communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are essential. English language proficiency is required as per UCL standards.
