About this position
This PhD studentship at the University of Exeter focuses on Raman spectroscopy for the early, on-farm diagnosis of nephrocalcinosis in salmon and trout aquaculture.
Nephrocalcinosis, a kidney stone disease caused by precipitation of calcium minerals, is described as a major welfare and productivity issue for trout and salmon producers. The project is aimed at addressing a key industry need: early, cost-effective, and non-destructive diagnosis before disease progresses and affects growth, mortality, and welfare.
The research combines coherent Raman scattering microscopy, including Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) and Broadband Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (BCARS), with machine learning approaches to convert complex hyperspectral image data into practical diagnostic outputs. The method is intended to detect and quantify calcium-based mineral deposits in fish tissue without fixation or staining, offering the potential for rapid, label-free analysis in laboratory or future farm-site settings.
The project is highly collaborative and industry-facing. It builds on links with UK trout and salmon producers, including British Trout Association, Kames, MOWI, and Cooke Aquaculture Scotland, and will use tissue samples from industry sites. The PhD will also involve in vivo experiments at Exeter’s Aquatic Resources Facility to generate kidney tissue samples under controlled conditions that mimic nephrocalcinosis-linked environments.
Research themes include aquaculture health, fish welfare, water chemistry, mineral pathology, Raman spectroscopy, hyperspectral imaging, and machine learning-based image analysis. The work aims to improve diagnostic capability and support cost-effective analysis for aquaculture operations.
Funding includes fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7. The application deadline is 08 Dec 2026. Applicants should follow the University of Exeter application link for full submission details.
