About this position

[Funded studentship providing fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7.]

PhD Studentship at the University of Exeter in responsible innovation, metamaterials, circular economy, and sustainability.

This project examines how metamaterials can contribute to more sustainable and inclusive futures while also building a stronger evidence base for their real-world benefits and impacts. Metamaterials are advanced engineered materials with properties beyond those of their constituent materials, and they are increasingly being positioned as important technologies across sectors such as clean energy, manufacturing, transportation, and advanced products. The project is especially timely because decisions about manufacturing routes and end-of-life options are being made now, shaping the sustainability profile of these technologies for years to come.

The research will combine sustainability and circularity assessment, including Life Cycle Assessment, with qualitative and mixed-methods responsible innovation approaches. The successful candidate will investigate the promise, risks, and impacts of metamaterials by mapping current research, innovation, and policy contexts; carrying out in-depth case studies of up to five metamaterials projects, devices, components, or products; comparing these with equivalents using LCA and related assessment tools; and developing frameworks for responsible innovation that include stakeholder and public engagement. The project aims to generate new insights into the sociotechnical, ethical, political, cultural, environmental, and ecological dimensions of metamaterials.

The studentship is connected to the University of Exeter’s strong research environment, drawing on the Centre for Metamaterial Research and Innovation, the Exeter Centre for Circular Economy, and the Centre for Responsible Innovation. It is also linked to the wider MetaHUB ecosystem, with industry and policy engagement across advanced manufacturing and sustainability-oriented innovation. The project seeks to produce research findings and practical recommendations for academic, industry, policy, and civil society audiences on how metamaterials can be developed and deployed in ways that are more sustainable, inclusive, and responsible.

Funding: The studentship provides fees plus a stipend of £21,805 per annum for 2026/7 and is funded by EPSRC.

Deadline: 08 Dec 2026.
