About this position
Marcos H.D. Guimarães, Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge, is looking for outstanding PhD students to join the Opto-Spintronics of Quantum Materials group at the Cavendish Laboratory, Department of Physics.
The research focuses on opto-spintronics in van der Waals heterostructures, using time-resolved magneto-optics, photocurrent spectroscopy, and other optical and electrical techniques to study magnonics, spin and orbital torques, and spin/valley-polarised excitons in 2D materials.
For the 2027 intake, funding is expected for up to two PhD studentships. The opportunity is highly competitive, and the supervisor is especially interested in candidates with an excellent academic record, very strong transcripts, and a research background or interests closely aligned with the group.
The main Cambridge funding deadline for Physics PhD applicants is 8 December 2026. Interested candidates should contact the supervisor well before the deadline with a CV, academic transcripts, and a short description of their research interests.
Applications from excellent candidates from the UK and internationally are welcome. For more information, see the group website.
