About this position
Two PhD studentships in Sustainable Multi-Sector Electrification are available within the Power Electronics, Machines and Control (PEMC) Research Group at the University of Nottingham, UK. The project explores advanced integrated motor drive technologies for sustainable electricity generation, high-efficiency industrial systems, and lightweight transport applications.
Research will address one or more areas: mechanical integration of power converters and electrical machines; novel joining, winding, and 3D-printed structures; thermal management using advanced additive manufacturing; electromagnetic management involving wide-bandgap semiconductors, EMI mitigation, converter topologies, and winding technologies; and advanced control and modelling using FPGA platforms, microcontrollers, distributed control, artificial intelligence, neural networks, and evolutionary optimisation.
Applicants should hold a relevant Bachelor’s degree at 2:1 or above, or a relevant Master’s degree in electrical and electronic engineering, mechatronics, physics, materials science, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related subject. Experience in electrical machines, power electronics, control systems, thermal management, simulation tools such as COMSOL Multiphysics, MATLAB, or Ansys, programming, coding, or experimental hardware is desirable. Strong analytical, mathematical, communication, presentation, and scientific writing skills are required. The studentship is restricted to UK applicants.
Applications close on 30 November 2026. Submit a cover letter, CV, and academic transcripts by email to [email protected]. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed, after which the successful candidate must complete the formal University of Nottingham admissions application.
