About this position

A full-time postdoctoral fellowship is available in the Laboratory of Dr. Sayan Nandi at Howard University, in collaboration with Dr. Thomas Heinbockel and Dr. Byron Ford in the Department of Anatomy in Washington, DC.

The project investigates the roles of neuroinflammation in brain injury, with a particular emphasis on microglia as the brain’s principal immune cells. The work examines how microglial activation can both support recovery by clearing dead neurons and exacerbate injury by releasing proinflammatory signals and engulfing live neurons. The postdoctoral researcher will test these ideas using genetically engineered mouse models and will combine surgical, histological, imaging, and molecular approaches, including spatial transcriptomics and epigenetic methods, to study microglial contributions to recovery after neural injury.

The position is embedded in a collaborative research setting involving faculty, students, and researchers across the Department of Anatomy and the wider university environment. The fellow will manage an independent project, contribute to manuscript and grant development, and help train incoming students and postdoctoral fellows while participating in group meetings and professional development activities.

The appointment is described as immediately available.
