About this position
This postdoctoral position is based in Scarlet Shell’s lab in the Department of Biology & Biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). The project centers on how Mycobacterium tuberculosis manages the relationship between RNA metabolism and mutation tolerance, with a particular focus on the ways this pathogen mitigates fitness costs caused by mutations selected during antibiotic exposure and other infection-related stressors.
The successful fellow will contribute to a research program aimed at understanding the regulatory mechanisms that help mycobacterial pathogens tolerate stress and preserve fitness under disease-relevant conditions. The work combines complementary approaches in biochemistry, genetics, genomics, transcriptomics, and phenotypic profiling, offering a broad and interdisciplinary research experience in bacterial pathogenesis and molecular mechanisms of stress adaptation.
The position is housed in WPI’s Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center, a modern research facility designed for collaborative and interdisciplinary science. The broader environment at WPI emphasizes science and engineering research, and the lab’s location in Worcester provides connections to the greater Boston research ecosystem.
