About this position
This Research Associate position is based in the Department of Microbiology in Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). The role sits within Dr. Kelley Gallagher’s laboratory and focuses on bacterial development in Streptomyces, especially the regulation of sporulation, the evolution of these regulatory pathways across the phylum Actinomycetota, and how this knowledge can be used to manipulate antibiotic production.
The successful candidate will contribute to one or more active projects on Streptomyces development using approaches that may include molecular genetics, bacterial physiology, genomics, and biochemistry. The work is embedded in a large and active departmental environment with eleven research laboratories, a graduate field in Microbiology, and broad expertise in molecular and environmental microbiology. The department’s strengths span microbial genetics, gene regulation, genomics, microbial cell biology, bioremediation, symbionts, pathogens, and ecosystems.
In addition to research, the position includes responsibility for laboratory equipment maintenance and operation, as well as support for efficient day-to-day research activity. The role also includes preparing reports and manuscripts and contributing to the research culture of the lab and department. The appointment is located in Ithaca, New York, and is offered at 85% FTE for one year, with the possibility of extension depending on funding and performance.
