About this position
The postdoctoral project is hosted by the Ophthalmic Biology Group at the International Centre for Translational Eye Research (ICTER), within the Institute of Physical Chemistry, Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. The research is part of the National Science Centre SONATA BIS 9 project “A new approach of vision restoration based on modified Rabies virus tracing technique” led by Andrzej Foik.
The work combines translational eye research with molecular and cellular neuroscience to address retinal degeneration and vision loss. The project aims to develop methods for delivering opsins to surviving retinal neurons so that visual function can be restored in diseased retinas, while also limiting further network degeneration in animal models. A second major line of work focuses on viral tracing to map the retinal connectome in healthy and diseased animals and to understand how photoreceptor degeneration reshapes retinal circuitry.
The successful candidate will join a multi-investigator eye research environment that integrates visual neurophysiology with modern neural-circuit tracing approaches. The project uses genetically modified rabies viruses, AAV-based tools with cell-type-specific promoters, and experiments across in vivo and in vitro settings. The position is embedded in an internationally connected center that collaborates with University College London and supports research aimed at understanding the etiology and treatment of human blinding diseases.
The role is intended for a researcher who will contribute directly to lab development, experimental execution, and the preparation of high-impact publications. The postdoctoral scholar will work on virus-based retinal delivery and tracing strategies, supporting the creation of a competitive research group in translational vision science.

What's required
PhD or equivalent in biology, neurobiology, medicine or a related field, obtained within 7 years prior to joining the project (with eligible career-break extensions as stated). Candidates must not have had the principal investigator as their PhD supervisor or auxiliary supervisor and must not have been employed at the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS during the two years before employment. Required experience includes molecular biology and neurobiology research, work with animals in vivo and/or in vitro, gene cloning, vector design, cell transfections, virus production, record-keeping, microscopic imaging, scientific writing, reporting, R&D documentation, and use of bibliographic databases. Applicants should be able to work in a team, manage projects, work independently, solve problems creatively, and communicate in excellent English. Animal training under the cited act is an additional asset.
