About this position
This post-doctoral position sits within RESILIENT, a national competence centre for resilient energy systems co-financed by the Swedish Energy Agency and carried out in close collaboration with Scania. The project examines how manufacturing companies can use electricity more flexibly in response to renewable and variable power systems, helping to reduce costs, support the grid, and ease local constraints while maintaining productivity.
The research is based at the Division of Industrial Engineering and Management in the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering at Uppsala University. The department works across the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala and Campus Gotland, while this position is located in Uppsala. The division focuses on value creation across the life cycle of technology-intensive products, services, and related systems.
The project combines operational and strategic perspectives on industrial energy flexibility. On the operational side, the research may investigate how production planning, scheduling, and control can become more energy-aware. On the strategic side, it may explore how flexibility can be integrated into operations strategy, decision-making processes, and business models.
The exact research questions will be developed jointly with Scania during the initial phase of the project, giving the recruited researcher room to help shape the direction of the work. Depending on the industrial case and the candidate’s profile, the work may draw on data analytics, simulation, digital twins, optimization, AI-based decision support, case study research, and mixed methods. The role is designed for someone who enjoys problem-driven research at the interface of academia and industry and who wants to contribute both scientifically and in practical industrial collaboration.
The post involves research as the main duty, with some teaching, and includes planning and carrying out sub-studies, analysing production and energy data, developing models and decision support for energy-flexible operations, and working with partners in the RESILIENT centre through workshops, case studies, and dissemination to industry.

What's required
A PhD in industrial engineering and management, operations management, production engineering, energy systems engineering, computer science, or another related engineering science or interdisciplinary discipline, or an equivalent foreign degree. Applicants should have very good knowledge and experience in at least one relevant area such as operations management, production planning and control, modeling and simulation of production systems, optimization, or data analysis applied to industrial or energy data. Good analytical skills and documented empirical research experience are required, preferably including quantitative analysis such as statistical or time-series analysis. Candidates must have good collaboration skills, the ability to communicate with both academic and industrial audiences, and very good English skills, oral and written. The degree must be completed by the employment decision date, and preference is given to those who completed it within the last three years; special reasons may apply for older degrees. Meritorious qualifications include publications in highly ranked journals, independent research and grant-writing experience, industrial collaboration, case study or other empirical research in industrial settings, knowledge of industrial energy flexibility or related markets, techno-economic and strategic analysis, simulation/optimization/AI decision support, Python, and Swedish.
