About this position
Uppsala University is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in digital twins for resilient microgrids at the Division of Electricity, Department of Electrical Engineering, in Uppsala, Sweden. The 24-month, full-time position contributes to a collaboration with KTH – the Royal Institute of Technology and the City of Uppsala focused on strengthening energy security in a new urban district.
The project will develop a digital twin of a solar-based local microgrid and its digital infrastructure. Research activities include modelling electricity-grid topology, solar generation, local storage, distribution-grid interfaces, metering, sensors, IoT, communications, and control architectures. The researcher will simulate and assess system sizing, peak shaving, flexibility, power quality, island operation, automatic restoration, black start, grid-forming inverters, and resilience. The work will also couple electricity and heat-system models, support techno-economic analysis, and contribute to a physical test environment or physical twin.
The successful applicant will work with researchers at Uppsala University and KTH and spend part of their time with the City of Uppsala, engaging with planning materials, stakeholders, and implementation challenges. Duties also include publishing in scientific journals, presenting results to academic and public-sector audiences, contributing to external funding applications, and limited teaching or supervision of up to 20%.
Applicants need a PhD or equivalent foreign degree in electrical engineering, energy systems, or automatic control by the employment decision. Experience in electric-power-system modelling and simulation, automatic control for energy systems, and programming is required, together with excellent spoken and written English. Experience with microgrids, renewable energy, batteries, digital twins, real-time simulation, IoT, resilience analysis, or electricity-heat sector coupling is advantageous.
Applications must include a cover letter, CV, doctoral certificate and transcripts, doctoral thesis, relevant supporting documents, referee details, and publications. Apply through the Uppsala University recruitment system by 27 November 2026. For position enquiries, contact Professor Rafael Waters at [email protected].

What's required
Applicants must have a PhD degree or foreign equivalent in electrical engineering, energy systems, or automatic control by the employment decision. Priority is given to applicants whose degree was completed no more than three years before the application deadline, subject to extensions for circumstances such as sick leave or parental leave. Required qualifications include experience modelling and simulating electric power systems, knowledge of automatic control applied to energy systems, good programming skills, and very good oral and written English. Applicants should be able to work independently, take responsibility for advancing a project, collaborate effectively, and communicate research results to non-academic stakeholders. Desired qualifications include experience with microgrids, DC grids, solar power, battery storage, digital twins, real-time simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, energy-infrastructure digitalisation, IoT, data platforms, resilience analysis, island operation, black start, grid-forming inverters, electricity-heat sector coupling, collaboration with municipalities or industry, and Swedish.
