About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher position within the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Department EA11 - Materialen, Textiel en Chemische Proceskunde. The successful candidate will join the VLAIO-funded Catalisti Moonshot innovation project BIOVALCOR, which aims to demonstrate an integrated, waste-free biorefinery concept using rapeseed meal as a raw material. The project focuses on the full valorization of rapeseed meal components, including proteins, hydroxycinnamic acids, carbohydrates, lignin, and lipids.

The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for the lignin component, conducting experiments on the extraction and catalytic depolymerization of lignin from deproteinized rapeseed meal using green solvents. Key tasks include the characterization of lignin and its depolymerized products (oligomers, dimers, monomers) using advanced analytical techniques, and the development of a stable, continuous catalytic depolymerization process with well-chosen or synthesized catalysts. The researcher will collaborate with various partners, including knowledge and research institutions and an advisory board of companies, and contribute to new project proposals in heterogeneous catalysis within the INCAT research group, particularly in biomass conversion and valorization (INCAT research group).

Applicants must hold a thesis-based PhD (obtained within the last 6 years) in Chemical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering in Chemistry, or a related field. Required qualifications include experience with heterogeneous catalysis in biomass conversion (preferably lignin depolymerization), catalyst development, and practical experience with biomass extraction. Candidates should be skilled in various characterization techniques and possess excellent communication, presentation, planning, and writing skills. If the required diploma is in a language other than Dutch, French, German, or English, a translation must be provided.

The position offers a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 1 year, starting no earlier than 1 April 2026. Remuneration is determined by salary scale PD1, and Ghent University staff enjoy a range of benefits, including training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. The university encourages applications from all backgrounds as part of its equal opportunities and diversity policy.

To apply, candidates must submit their application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before 15 February 2026. Required documents include a CV and academic transcript (merged PDF), cover letter (PDF), diploma transcript, translation if necessary, reference letter, and overview of study results. Late or email applications will not be accepted. For further information about the vacancy, contact Prof. An Verberckmoes at [email protected].
