About this position
Post-Undergraduate Intern (Year-Round) – Separations Engineering
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, referred to in the posting as the National Laboratory of the Rockies, is seeking a full-time, on-site intern for its Separations Science and Engineering Group in Golden, Colorado. The group is part of the Bioenergy Science and Technology directorate and develops practical separation technologies for bio-derived and chemically synthesized products, proteins, and critical minerals such as rare-earth elements.
The intern will contribute to laboratory-based separation experiments and the development, assembly, and modification of custom separation equipment. Potential activities include benchtop wet chemistry, sample preparation, chemical or protein purification, multiscale chromatography, electrochemical separations, and automation of custom systems. Candidates may also gain exposure to Python or Rust programming and collaborate with teams working in fermentation, catalysis, polymer synthesis, and techno-economic analysis.
Applicants need a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and must be enrolled full time in an accredited bachelor's or master's program, have graduated from one of those programs within the previous 12 months, or be enrolled in a PhD program after completing a master's degree. Laboratory experience and exposure to analytical chemistry, organic chemistry, and/or biochemistry are required. Familiarity with TLC, flash chromatography, distillation, liquid-liquid extraction, GC, HPLC, chemical synthesis, Aspen Plus, or programming is desirable but not mandatory.
The internship is fixed-term, year-round, and offers 40 hours per week with an annualized salary range of $39,600–$63,400. Eligible benefits may include medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 403(b) plan with employer match, sick leave, and possible relocation support. Applicants must provide a resume, cover letter, and official or unofficial transcripts. A recommendation letter is required if selected. The anticipated application submission window is up to 30 days and may be extended.
