About this position
This postdoctoral project focuses on developing bio-based, waste-derived, and circular façade systems that integrate plant growth to improve the performance and sustainability of buildings. The work is part of BIO-SKIN (Bio-Inspired Outer Surfaces to Kool, Insulate and Nurture), a collaborative effort aimed at creating façade panels that keep buildings cool, provide insulation, support biodiversity, and contribute to healthier urban environments.
The research asks how plant-soil-insect interactions develop in shallow-soil ecosystems and how those ecological dynamics can be translated into design principles for next-generation green façades. The postdoc will combine fundamental and applied ecology to better understand how ecological communities establish and function in constrained urban settings, with attention to biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, thermal insulation, carbon sequestration, microclimate regulation, and habitat provision for insects and other arthropods.
The role is embedded in a highly interdisciplinary setting at Wageningen University & Research, working within the Biosystematics Group and the Laboratory of Entomology. The team brings together expertise in design, materials, biomaterial chemistry, architecture, biology, engineering, sustainability, and the built environment, and collaborates with companies developing green façade technologies. The postdoc will also work one day a week with the wider BIO-SKIN team at the AMS Institute in Amsterdam.
The position centers on theoretical assessment of suitable flora/fauna combinations for shading, cooling, and biodiversity enhancement, followed by the coordination of façade-panel experiments in close collaboration with a PhD candidate. The project includes analysis of ecological and physiological data, publication of scientific results, and interaction with academic and non-academic partners to turn ecological insights into practical façade solutions. The researcher will also contribute to teaching and supervise BSc and MSc students.
The work is supervised by dr. ir. Casper Quist and Prof. Bregje Wertheim and is embedded in the PE&RC graduate school, offering access to a broad training environment in life sciences and ecology.
