About this position

Postdoctoral opening at Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste S.C.p.A. for the ESCA Microscopy beamline in Trieste, Italy. The position focuses on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoemission microscopy, surface analysis, and spatially resolved studies of materials and nanostructures.

The successful candidate will work on chemical and electronic characterization of advanced materials such as functionalized 2D materials, solid oxide fuel cells, semiconducting nanowires, transparent conductive oxides, and catalysts. Experiments will be carried out under UHV/HV conditions and in near-ambient-pressure environments, including operando studies of complex devices. The postdoc is also expected to contribute to the design, manufacturing, and commissioning of a new end station as part of the 2027 refurbishment of the microscope station.

Eligibility highlights: Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, or a related field; no more than 6 years of total postdoctoral experience; applicants who have completed their doctoral course and have a scheduled defense may also apply, provided the Ph.D. is awarded by the end of December 2026. A strong background in XPS and/or photoemission microscopy, plus a relevant publication record, is required. Experience with synchrotron beamline instrumentation is an important advantage.

Additional desirable skills include surface science, sample preparation and film growth, programming for data acquisition and analysis, near-ambient-pressure XPS, and electrochemical materials research. English communication skills, teamwork, and good time management are required.

Contract details: fixed-term appointment for 12 months, renewable up to 36 months, with gross annual salary from €30,814.29 to €32,500.00 depending on experience and qualifications. Applications require a CV and contact details for up to two referees; a motivation letter is desirable. Deadline: 28 October 2026.
