About this position
The University of Luxembourg, a leading international research university, is offering a postdoctoral position in AI-based health-monitoring and Fault Detection, Isolation, and Recovery (FDIR) for satellites. The position is based at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), specifically within the Space Robotics (SpaceR) research group. SpaceR is renowned for its work across the spectrum of space robotics, including in-space servicing, assembly, manufacturing, space debris removal, immersive teleoperation, robotic multi-modal perception, and multi-robot cooperation. The group provides access to state-of-the-art facilities such as LunaLab, Zero-G Lab, and the Space Robotic Manipulation Lab, supporting advanced research and experimentation.
The successful candidate will take a leading role in defining, acquiring, managing, and scientifically contributing to projects focused on AI-based health monitoring and FDIR for space-borne and robotic systems. Responsibilities include supporting PhD candidates, collaborating with Prof. Olivares-Mendez and the SpaceR team, and contributing to both fundamental and applied research in space robotics. The research environment is highly collaborative, with over 23 members, including professors, postdocs, PhD students, and research assistants.
Applicants should possess a PhD in a relevant field and demonstrate expertise in spacecraft subsystems, servicing missions, or robotic operations. Required skills include experience with spacecraft health monitoring or FDIR architectures, knowledge of ESA SAVOIR or other space-system safety standards, and proficiency in simulation, Software-in-the-Loop, or Hardware-in-the-Loop testing. Integration of AI methods with control, estimation, or autonomy frameworks, and familiarity with on-orbit servicing missions, proximity operations, or satellite autonomy are essential. Fluency in English is mandatory.
The University of Luxembourg offers a modern, dynamic, and inclusive atmosphere, with staff from over 90 countries and strong links to professional sectors and the Luxembourg labour market. The postdoctoral contract is for 24 months, with a yearly gross salary of EUR 85,176. The university is committed to equality and encourages applications from individuals of all backgrounds.
To apply, candidates must submit a CV, cover letter detailing motivation and alignment with the research topic, PhD diploma or expected defense date, transcript of university-level courses, and a list of publications. Applications should be submitted online via the HR system; email applications will not be considered. Early applications are encouraged as they will be processed upon reception.
