About this position

Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education, with a particular focus on STEM disciplines. The position is based at the Division of Engineering Education Research (EER), Department of Communication and Learning in Science (CLS), in Gothenburg, Sweden. The research group offers a collaborative and dynamic environment, with a strong emphasis on educational innovation and scientific communication.

The research project centers on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence, especially generative AI technologies, on higher education. Candidates are encouraged to propose projects that examine the pedagogical, cognitive, social, or institutional implications of AI adoption in higher education. Projects should combine empirical rigor with reflective or critical perspectives, exploring not only the capabilities of AI for learning but also its broader consequences for learners, teachers, and institutions.

Potential research topics include: how students and teachers in STEM use AI-based tools for learning, problem-solving, and assessment; the influence of AI technologies on cognitive and metacognitive processes such as reasoning, conceptual understanding, and self-regulation; and institutional responses, governance models, and ethical frameworks for integrating AI in higher education. Both quantitative methods (e.g., learning analytics, surveys, large-scale data analysis) and qualitative or mixed-method approaches are welcomed.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree in Educational Sciences or a related field with a strong connection to educational technology, completed by the time of employment decision. Required qualifications include expertise in quantitative and/or qualitative research methods for educational research, a promising publication record in relevant journals or conferences, excellent written and verbal English communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Preferred qualifications include a doctoral degree obtained within the last three years, participation in international research networks, and experience in close-to-practice educational research with students and/or teachers.

The postdoctoral position is a full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the employment. Chalmers offers a dynamic working environment, comprehensive employee benefits, and support for settling in Sweden, including Swedish language courses. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and actively supports diversity through initiatives such as the GENIE project.

To apply, submit your application via the online form by May 24, 2026. Required documents include a comprehensive CV, personal letter, project proposal (2-3 A4 pages), copies of PhD thesis, 2-3 relevant publications, transcripts, and certificates. Applications must be complete and submitted in PDF format; incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. Contact details to references will be requested after the interview. For questions, contact Prof. Christian Stöhr at [email protected].
