About this position
This postdoctoral position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on the development of advanced inverse design procedures for improved chip quality in photonic quantum computing. Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are revolutionizing fields such as healthcare, communication, sensing, and quantum computing, and the Netherlands is investing heavily in integrated photonics through the PhotonDelta National Growth Fund program. The project is part of a nationwide consortium led by QuiX Quantum, aiming to scale photonic quantum computing using PIC technology.
The main research challenge is to achieve high fabrication yield and maintain circuit performance despite process variations in large-scale manufacturing. As photonic quantum processors become more complex, even minor fabrication imperfections can degrade performance. The project addresses these challenges by developing tolerance-aware inverse-design methodologies for photonic quantum computing building blocks. The research combines computational photonic design, manufacturability optimization, and system-level validation to create robust photonic components such as beam splitters, couplers, and interferometric structures. Realistic fabrication constraints, including etch-depth variations, line-edge roughness, and dimensional deviations, are incorporated directly into the optimization process. The project will also establish robust libraries of manufacturable photonic components and validate them through collaboration with foundry partners.
The successful candidate will join the Photonic Integration (PhI) group at TU/e, which comprises over 90 researchers working on cutting-edge integrated photonics technologies. The postdoc will be embedded in a multidisciplinary quantum photonics team, collaborating with PhD students, postdocs, and senior researchers. The project benefits from strong industrial and academic partnerships within the PhotonDelta ecosystem and access to advanced cleanroom facilities at NanoLab@TU/e, as well as external foundry platforms.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, with a strong background in integrated photonics, semiconductor devices, and physics. Experience in design, numerical modeling, component design, and experimental work (especially cleanroom microfabrication and chip characterization) is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate excellent analytical, communication, and documentation skills, and be able to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
Employment is full-time for 2 years, with a competitive salary (scale 10: €4,241–€5,538), year-end bonus, vacation pay, and allowances for commuting, working from home, and internet costs. Additional benefits include access to high-quality training programs, technical infrastructure, on-campus childcare and sports facilities, partially paid parental leave, and support for international candidates (tax compensation scheme and moving expenses). The TU/e Postdoc Association offers tailored support, training, and networking opportunities.
To apply, submit a complete application online, including a cover letter, CV, and contact information for three references. Applications will be screened promptly, and the vacancy remains open until filled. For further information, contact Associate Professor Humeyra Caglayan ([email protected]) or [email protected]. The position is based in Eindhoven, Netherlands, within the vibrant Brainport tech region.
