About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Digital Health for Defence Medicine, based in Gothenburg, Sweden. This opportunity is situated within the Division of Signal Processing and Biomedical Engineering at the Department of Electrical Engineering, and is part of the Care@Distance group, led by Dr Stefan Candefjord and Prof Emeritus Bengt Arne Sjöqvist. The group focuses on advancing prehospital care for civilian and military settings through AI-driven and innovative digital solutions, aiming to increase decision precision and improve medical outcomes, especially in mass casualty incidents (MCI) and military triage.
The research project, funded by the Swedish Armed Forces, centers on developing a robust, user-friendly digital decision support system for personnel with limited medical training, such as combat medics. The system will dynamically estimate survival chances and prioritize patients for transport and surgery during MCIs. The project leverages AI-based methods, including On Scene Injury Severity Prediction (OSISP) models, and utilizes a virtual test environment called Virtuality to assess improvements in logistics and mortality reduction.
As a postdoc, you will lead the development of AI models and software for handheld devices, conduct user tests in challenging environments, and iteratively refine system functionality. The role involves programming (primarily in Python), applying principles of Service Design (SD) and Interaction Design (IxD), and collaborating with Swedish Armed Forces personnel. You will also contribute to scientific publications (3–5 papers), supervise master’s and/or PhD students, and may engage in undergraduate/master’s teaching. The position is designed to be meritorious for future academic, industry, or public sector roles.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Biomedical Engineering, Digital Health, Data Science, or a related field, completed by the time of employment decision. Essential skills include strong English communication, proficiency in programming and Data Science (Python, R), and personal competencies such as collaboration, curiosity, and independence. Experience in AI model development for healthcare, trauma care, digital health, Service Design, and Interaction Design is advantageous. Swedish proficiency should be stated. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required, and a valid residence permit must be presented at the start date.
The position is a full-time, temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Chalmers offers a dynamic work environment, employee benefits, and access to Sweden’s welfare system, including parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and offers Swedish language courses for non-native speakers.
To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files (CV, personal letter, publication list, teaching experience) via the application form. Incomplete or emailed applications will not be considered. Reference contacts will be requested after interviews. The application deadline is 31 May 2026. For further information, contact Dr Stefan Candefjord, Associate Professor, Project leader ([email protected]), Andreas Fhager, Associate Professor, Head of Unit ([email protected]), or Prof Emeritus Bengt Arne Sjöqvist, Senior advisor ([email protected]).
Chalmers University of Technology is a leading institution in technology and natural sciences, fostering innovation and collaboration for a sustainable world. Founded in 1829, Chalmers continues its tradition of scientific excellence and global engagement.
