About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the Division of Materials and Manufacture, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Gothenburg, Sweden. This opportunity is ideal for researchers interested in the electrochemical synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) materials and their integration into advanced gas sensing applications. The project focuses on developing an electrochemical exfoliation approach to produce high-quality, large-area molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) nanosheets, tailored for sub-ppb level NO₂ detection.
The Division of Materials and Manufacture covers the entire value chain from materials design, processing, and characterization to machining of advanced materials. The research environment is highly collaborative, with strong ties to other universities, research institutes, and industry partners. Chalmers is committed to sustainability, gender equality, and diversity, offering a dynamic workplace in the coastal city of Gothenburg.
The successful candidate will:
- Develop electrochemical exfoliation methods for synthesizing 2D MoS₂ materials.
- Perform in-situ characterization (e.g., Raman spectroscopy) to study intercalation and exfoliation mechanisms.
- Conduct advanced material characterization (TEM, XRD, XPS, AFM) to analyze structure and properties.
- Optimize material properties (thickness, phase, morphology) for gas sensing applications.
- Supervise master’s and/or PhD students and participate in teaching at undergraduate/master’s level.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in materials science, electrochemistry, inorganic chemistry, or an equivalent foreign degree by the time of employment decision. Strong English communication skills and experience in electrochemical synthesis of 2D materials are mandatory. Teaching experience and research potential are expected. It is highly meritorious if the doctoral degree was obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline. Experience in thin film fabrication and gas sensing is advantageous. Physical presence is required throughout employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
The position is a full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Chalmers offers all employee benefits, including generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. Swedish language courses are available for non-native speakers. The university actively promotes gender balance and inclusion through initiatives such as the GENIE project.
To apply, submit your application via the online form by 19 July 2026. Attach your CV, publication list, teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining your research background and goals. Applications must be complete and written in English. References will be requested after interviews. For questions, contact Dr. Zhenyuan Xia ([email protected]) or Prof. Timur Shegai ([email protected]).
Chalmers University of Technology is renowned for its research and education in technology and natural sciences, fostering innovation and scientific excellence since 1829. Join us to advance knowledge and contribute to a sustainable future.
