About this position
Postdoc opportunity at Utrecht University in multi-risk adaptation pathways for river delta systems.
This 2-year postdoctoral position is based in the Faculty of Geosciences, Department of Physical Geography, at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The project focuses on climate adaptation, river delta systems, hydrology, stakeholder engagement, participatory research, systems modelling, and decision-making under uncertainty. You will work on the Dynamic Adaptive Pathways Planning for Multi-Risk (DAPP-MR) framework to design robust adaptation pathways for complex multi-sectoral delta systems.
The research will begin with collaboration with decision-makers and stakeholders in the Dutch delta to characterize current and future risks and identify trade-offs among sectoral priorities such as drinking water, flood protection, and ecosystem preservation. You will then develop methods for designing adaptation pathways, compare them with state-of-the-art adaptive pathway planning, and communicate results through stakeholder meetings, scientific conferences, and academic journals.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Civil Engineering, Earth Science, Environmental Science, (Socio-) Hydrology, Physical Geography, or a related field; a strong publication record; experience with systems modelling and programming (e.g. Python); strong English communication and scientific writing skills. Helpful experience includes Dynamic Adaptive Pathways Planning, Decision Making Under Deep Uncertainty, multi-objective optimization, stakeholder engagement, and river/coastal/delta systems modelling.
Funding and terms: 1.0 FTE, gross monthly salary €3,706–€5,760 (scale 10, CAO NU), plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits.
Deadline: 16 November 2026.
How to apply: Use the “apply now” button on the vacancy page and submit your CV and motivation letter. International candidates may need to provide degree documents and grade lists if shortlisted.
