About this position
Radboud University is advertising a postdoctoral position in Public Toilet Governance, Social Infrastructure and Inclusive Cities within the Nijmegen School of Management in the Netherlands.
The postdoc will join the European DUT project TOILED (Towards More Resilient Urban Infrastructures through Toilet-Led Research and Policy on Provisioning, Accessibility and Maintenance of Public Toilets), coordinated by Dr Rianne van Melik. The project brings together researchers and urban partners from the Netherlands, Belgium, and Türkiye, and focuses on how public toilets shape urban inclusion, health inequalities, and social justice.
Research themes include public toilet governance, social infrastructure, inclusive cities, urban inequalities, public space, and urban accessibility. The project investigates provisioning, socio-spatial accessibility, and maintenance of public toilets in Rotterdam, Ghent, and Ankara. The postdoc will help design and coordinate comparative research and conduct fieldwork in Rotterdam.
The methodology is qualitative and interdisciplinary, including policy and institutional analysis, mapping, ethnographic observation, and interviews with policymakers, toilet providers, maintenance workers, advocacy organisations, and affected populations such as older adults, homeless individuals, disabled people, and people with digestive illnesses.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Human Geography, Urban Studies, Urban Sociology, Spatial Planning, or a related field. The university asks for experience with qualitative and/or ethnographic methods, an excellent publication record, strong organisational and communication skills, and proficiency in both English and Dutch. Interest in co-creation, stakeholder engagement, and policy-relevant research is important.
The appointment is for 3 years. Salary starts at €4,599 gross per month on a 38-hour working week, with a listed range of €3,706–€5,760, plus an 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, and extra leave options.
To apply, submit your CV, cover letter, and one publication via the official application portal. The deadline is 15 November 2026. Interviews are planned for 30 November 2026, and the preferred start date is 1 January 2027 or as soon as possible thereafter.
