Variational Quantum Computing Beyond the Near Term is a PhD project at the University of Southampton investigating how variational quantum algorithms can become more robust on noisy quantum computers. The research focuses on simulated quantum systems and hybrid classical-quantum frameworks. You will explore error-correction-inspired techniques and learned redundancy within variational computational methods, with the aim of enabling larger and more reliable quantum computations despite hardware n...

This funded PhD project in quantum computing and quantum control will investigate whether counterdiabatic shortcuts can accelerate quantum linear-system solvers under realistic noise and hardware constraints. Quantum linear-system algorithms are relevant to simulation, optimisation, control and data analysis because they prepare quantum states related to solutions of linear equations. Adiabatic approaches can become slow when spectral gaps are small or matrices are poorly conditioned. The projec...

About this position

The Centre for Quantum Mathematics (QM) at the University of Southern Denmark’s Department of Mathematics and Computer Science is recruiting postdoctoral researchers for a 2- to 3-year appointment focused on quantum algorithms and quantum software. The position is embedded in a highly international and interdisciplinary centre that connects pure mathematics, mathematical physics, and quantum computer science, with research activity spanning both fundamental and applied directions.

QM has grown over the past seven years into a distinctive research environment in Odense, attracting international researchers and building a broad platform for collaboration. The centre is expanding further with major university investment and a new dedicated building on the SDU campus, supporting its growing community and research ambitions.

The postdoc will contribute to internationally competitive research and have the opportunity to help shape ideas and projects with national and international impact. The advertised topics include mathematics, mathematical physics, quantum algorithms, quantum software architecture, and quantum computing, placing the appointment at the interface of theory, computation, and quantum information science.

The centre is active in several large European, Danish, and American grants, including projects in low-dimensional topology, topological photonic quantum computing, quantum geometry, categorical symmetries, and quantum field theory. This creates a rich research setting with links across topology, geometry, physics, and quantum technologies.

The position is based at the Faculty of Science on the international campus in Odense, Denmark. The advertised contact for further information is the Head of the Centre, Jørgen Ellegaard Andersen.
