About this position

Osaka University’s Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Life Science (QIQB) invites applications for one full-time, fixed-term Project Assistant Professor or Project Research Fellow, equivalent to a Postdoctoral Fellow, in quantum machine learning and quantum computing.

The position is part of the JST ASPIRE project “Construction of Innovative Machine Learning Methods Using Quantum Features,” which runs from July 2026 to June 2030. The successful researcher will work with Kazuhisa Ogawa on implementing and demonstrating quantum machine learning algorithms on superconducting quantum computers.

Research may include quantum feature extraction, quantum latent representation learning, classical-quantum hybrid machine learning, quantum control, pulse optimization using classical machine learning, quantum software development, numerical simulation, benchmarking, and performance evaluation on actual quantum hardware. The role also involves international collaboration with partner institutions in the Netherlands, including long-term overseas stays, research meetings, workshops, researcher exchanges, and project reporting.

Applicants should have substantial research experience in quantum information, quantum computing, quantum machine learning, superconducting quantum computing, quantum control, quantum software, machine learning, computer science, mathematical sciences, or a related area. Peer-reviewed publications in quantum computing, machine learning, or related fields are desirable. Strong English communication skills and availability for long-term overseas assignments are required; Japanese proficiency is desirable.

The annual basic salary is at least ¥6,648,000 for the Project Assistant Professor equivalent position and at least ¥6,123,000 for the Project Research Fellow/Postdoctoral equivalent position. The appointment is initially through March 31, 2028, with possible renewal subject to project continuation and performance review. The workplace is Osaka University in Toyonaka, Osaka, Japan.

Applications are accepted by email until November 30, 2026, or until a suitable candidate is selected. Submit a CV, publication and research achievements list, up to three major papers and abstracts, details for two referees, and a research statement of no more than two A4 pages. Online interviews are available.
