Join the Division of Geoscience and Remote Sensing at Chalmers University of Technology as a postdoctoral researcher and contribute to advancing knowledge about sea ice dynamics and navigation support using synthetic aperture radar (SAR). This project, funded by the Swedish National Space Agency and managed by the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat, aims to develop and test innovative methods for converting satellite data into detailed, operational information about ice conditions. The overarching goal is to improve navigation safety, reduce fuel consumption, and enable safer research operations in the rapidly changing Arctic environment.
The Department of Space, Earth and Environment at Chalmers brings together expertise in space, geoscience, energy, and sustainability, fostering curiosity-driven research and collaboration to address complex environmental challenges. The Division of Geoscience and Remote Sensing specializes in developing advanced observational methods, integrating satellite, airborne, and ground-based measurements with modeling and machine learning to monitor environmental change globally.
As a postdoc, you will apply, validate, and improve algorithms for observing sea ice drift and deformation with SAR, participate in Arctic field work and expeditions, order and prepare satellite data, collect and apply validation data, and present results in journals, reports, and conferences. You will also have opportunities to supervise master’s and/or PhD students and engage in teaching at the undergraduate or master’s level. The position is designed to be meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.
The position is a fully funded, temporary full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Applicants must have a doctoral degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in radar remote sensing, physical oceanography, electrical engineering, physics, or related disciplines, completed by the time of employment. Required qualifications include a strong background in mathematics, physics, and programming, experience with SAR data processing or analysis, excellent English communication skills, and the ability to collaborate in an interdisciplinary and international environment. Experience in teaching, sea ice field work, polar expeditions, and work with oceanographic or meteorological data and models will be considered an asset. Preference is given to candidates who obtained their doctoral degree within the last three years.
