About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in simulation model development for climate-neutral waterborne transport on coastal and inland waterways. The successful candidate will join the Division of Marine Technology within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, contributing to innovative research that supports the transition to sustainable maritime systems and a fossil-free society.
The research project focuses on advancing electromobility in shipping by integrating high-fidelity vessel operation simulations with energy system analysis. The aim is to optimize performance, energy use, and infrastructure deployment for electrified waterborne transport, particularly in coastal and inland waterways. Building on the VPF-IWV voyage planning framework and the ChaSE platform, the project adapts electric propulsion and energy system modules for operations in shallow, confined waterways and Swedish winter conditions. Route-specific simulations will quantify energy demand, assess battery performance, and evaluate operational reliability under environmental disturbances such as currents, waves, and ice.
Life-cycle techno-environmental-economic assessments will compare alternative vessel concepts, including high-capacity ships and small-vessel platooning, while optimizing charging infrastructure location, power allocation, and utilization. The project combines operational data, renewable energy integration, and electromobility assessment to support the Swedish and European shift from road to waterborne transport. Results will provide actionable guidance for industry adoption, policy development, and deployment of resilient, low-emission, and electrified shipping systems.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Computer Sciences, or an equivalent foreign degree, completed by the employment decision. Strong English communication skills and proficiency in Python and Matlab are required. Experience in ship energy systems modelling, ship motions analyses, and hydrodynamics-related research is essential. Collaborative skills and some teaching experience are expected. It is highly meritorious if the doctoral degree was obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline. Experience in leading projects and presenting at international conferences will strengthen the application.
The postdoc will develop a performance assessment framework for electrified vessels, create models for hydraulic data and operational profiles, conduct operational analyses of ship dynamics and environmental disturbances, and assess battery performance under Nordic winter conditions. A life-cycle assessment framework will be developed to quantify environmental and economic performance of vessel concepts, optimizing charging infrastructure deployment. The role includes supervising master’s and/or PhD students and possible teaching at undergraduate/master’s level. The position is meritorious for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence is required throughout employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Chalmers offers a dynamic working environment in Gothenburg, Sweden, with generous employee benefits, including parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, and offers Swedish courses for non-native speakers.
To apply, submit your application via the online form by September 1, 2026. Attach your CV, publication list, teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining your research background and goals. Applications must be complete and written in English; incomplete or emailed applications will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview. For questions, contact Jonas W. Ringsberg ([email protected]) or Wengang Mao ([email protected]).
