About this position
University of Massachusetts Lowell is hiring a postdoc in smart grid cybersecurity, cyber-physical systems, distributed systems, and real-time / hardware-in-the-loop simulation for the SUMMIT project, an NSF Major Research Instrumentation award spanning UMass Lowell, NYU, and West Virginia University.
The role is centered on leading day-to-day development of a federated platform that connects the three sites and enables researchers to run experiments on instruments across campuses as a standing service. The work involves a smart grid cybersecurity testbed with real-time simulation and attack scenarios such as spoofed GOOSE messages, injected sampled values, and manipulated SCADA traffic.
You would work with a new RTDS NovaCor 2.0 real-time simulator, existing OPAL-RT equipment, SEL-451 relays, SEL-3555 automation controllers, software-defined network switches, and GPS-disciplined timing. The project emphasizes building the federation layer, integrating the sites, and supporting experiments that mimic real grid behavior without affecting a live power grid.
Eligibility highlights include a PhD in ECE, computer engineering, computer science, power and energy systems, or a closely related area, plus depth in at least one relevant area such as smart grids, cybersecurity, SDN/networking, distributed systems, digital twins, or real-time/HIL simulation. Experience with RTDS or OPAL-RT is a strong plus, along with IEC 61850, IEEE C37.118, DNP3, IEEE 2030.5, GPS, or PTP timing.
