About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position focused on advancing sodium-ion battery technology for transport applications. The successful candidate will join the energy storage team within the Department of Electrical Engineering, Division of Electric Power Engineering, and collaborate with the Battery Management Systems (BMS) team in the Division of Automatic Control. The research project aims to investigate the maturity and performance of commercial sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and their electrode materials, evaluating their potential as sustainable alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIB) in transport systems.
Core responsibilities include planning, preparing, and conducting experiments for cell performance measurements, teardown analysis, and electrode material characterization. The postdoc will analyze experimental data and contribute to the further development of existing battery models in collaboration with researchers specializing in modelling, estimation, and prediction of battery systems. Results are expected to be published in scientific journals and presented at international conferences. The role also involves departmental duties, including supervision of master’s and PhD students and participation in teaching activities (10–20% of time).
The position is a full-time, two-year contract with the possibility of a one-year extension. Chalmers offers a dynamic and collaborative research environment, employee benefits, and support for international staff, including Swedish language courses. The university is committed to gender equality and sustainability, with active initiatives such as the GENIE project. The postdoc will be based in Gothenburg, Sweden, a city known for its generous social benefits and vibrant academic community.
Eligibility requirements include a doctoral degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Material Science, or a related field, with strong knowledge of battery technology. Candidates must demonstrate advanced research skills, proficiency in English, and some teaching experience. Recent graduates (within three years of the application deadline) are especially encouraged to apply. Experience in electrochemistry, mathematical modelling, electrotechnology, and laboratory work is advantageous. Knowledge of Swedish is a plus. Physical presence is required throughout the employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
To apply, submit your application via the Chalmers online portal by 2026-08-16. Required documents include a comprehensive CV (with publication list), details of teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining your research background and future goals. Incomplete or emailed applications will not be considered. References will be requested after the interview stage. For further information, contact Assistant Professor Evelina Wikner at [email protected].
This postdoctoral opportunity is ideal for candidates seeking to contribute to cutting-edge battery research with real-world impact in sustainable transport, and offers a strong foundation for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.
