About this position

Chalmers University of Technology is inviting applications for a postdoctoral position in Urban Morphology, Environmental Exposure and Health at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The project examines how the urban environment people encounter in daily life differs from the environment around their homes, and what this means for understanding environmental exposure and health. The work focuses on the relationship between urban form, everyday mobility, and exposure to both beneficial and adverse environmental conditions, including urban nature, heat, air pollution, and noise.

The successful candidate will join the Spatial Morphology Group (SMoG) within the Urban Design and Planning division. The group works at the intersection of urban morphology, Space Syntax, GIS, urban analytics, pedestrian modelling, and Social-Ecological Urbanism, and is extending its research to examine how urban form shapes environmental conditions and health-related exposure patterns.

The project will develop and compare residential, mobility-based, and trajectory-based measures of environmental exposure. It will combine GPS trajectories, spatially and temporally detailed environmental data, and health and wellbeing data from wearables, surveys, and other sources. The research aims to improve understanding of where people move, what environmental conditions they encounter, how long they are exposed, and how accumulated exposure relates to health and wellbeing.

The position is highly interdisciplinary and involves GIS, statistical and geospatial methods, mobility research, exposure science, and environmental health. The postdoc will collaborate with researchers at Chalmers and external partners, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and present findings at international conferences.

Applicants must hold a PhD in a closely related field such as Urban Planning, Urban Design, Urban Studies, Geography, Environmental Health, Environmental Psychology, or Human Ecology. Strong quantitative research skills, experience with GIS and spatial analysis, and experience analysing mobility or exposure data are required. Experience with GPS data, PPGIS, wearables, environmental exposure modelling, longitudinal or repeated-measures data, and programming in R or Python is especially valued.

The position is a two-year full-time temporary appointment with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence is required throughout the appointment, and a valid residence permit must be shown by the start date. Applicants should have demonstrated experience in quantitative research on relationships between people and their built and/or natural environments, strong experience in GIS and spatial analysis, demonstrated experience analysing mobility, exposure, environmental or other spatially and temporally referenced data, strong quantitative and statistical analytical skills, a strong publication record relative to career stage, excellent written and spoken English, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment. Experience with GPS or other mobility data, PPGIS, wearable data, environmental exposure modelling, longitudinal or repeated-measures data, and programming in R, Python or similar is particularly meritorious. A doctoral degree obtained within the last three years is highly meritorious.
