About this position
A postdoctoral researcher is sought in the group of Professor Maria Ibáñez at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) in Klosterneuburg near Vienna. The project focuses on advanced electron microscopy of nanocrystal assembly and supercrystal formation, with the aim of understanding how individual nanocrystals organize, interact, and transform as they build ordered superstructures.
The work combines high-resolution structural characterization with three-dimensional electron microscopy, and where possible, in situ observations of the dynamics of assembly and transformation. The successful candidate will contribute to nanoscale structural studies of materials systems where orientation, interfaces, and crystallographic relationships are central to how ordered architectures emerge.
This position is embedded in an international research environment at ISTA, an institute with strong activity across mathematics, computer science, life sciences, and physical sciences. The postdoc will work closely with researchers studying nanocrystal synthesis and assembly, contributing microscopy expertise to a collaborative materials research effort.
Funding details
€73,500 gross/year, with possible overpayment depending on education, qualification and work experience.
What's required
A PhD in Materials Science, Nanoscience, Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related field is required. Applicants should have strong hands-on experience in advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM/STEM), including high-resolution imaging and structural analysis of nanoscale materials, and be able to independently design, perform, analyze, and interpret electron microscopy experiments. Experience in image processing and quantitative analysis of TEM/STEM data is required. Applicants should show a strong interest in nanocrystal organization, interfaces, crystallographic orientation, and nanoscale structure, be able to work independently while collaborating closely with researchers on nanocrystal synthesis and assembly, and demonstrate high motivation, scientific curiosity, and strong problem-solving skills. Excellent written and spoken English is required. Desirable experience includes electron tomography and 3D reconstruction, in situ or liquid-cell TEM, low-dose electron microscopy, advanced image analysis, and experience with nanocrystals, colloidal nanoparticles, superlattices/supercrystals, or semiconductor nanocrystals (especially metal chalcogenides).
