About this position
A postdoctoral position is open in the research group of Professor Maria Ibáñez at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria in Klosterneuburg near Vienna. The project centers on the advanced microstructural characterization of functional materials by transmission electron microscopy, with a particular emphasis on how processing conditions influence microstructure, defects, and resulting material properties.
The successful researcher will work with a new aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope and contribute to studies of nanostructured and bulk functional materials. The work is strongly experimental and focuses on high- and atomic-resolution electron microscopy to analyze defects, interfaces, grain boundaries, secondary phases, nanoscale precipitates, and related crystallographic features.
The position sits within ISTA’s international research environment, where the selected postdoc will collaborate closely with researchers developing functional inorganic materials. The project offers access to advanced imaging and analytical capabilities and is aimed at someone who can independently design, perform, and interpret sophisticated electron microscopy experiments while connecting nanoscale structure to materials behavior.
The advert also highlights a range of desirable advanced techniques, including aberration-corrected TEM/STEM, HAADF-STEM, ABF-STEM, STEM-EDS, EELS, electron diffraction methods, quantitative image analysis, and strain or orientation mapping.

What's required
A PhD in Materials Science, Nanoscience, Chemistry, Physics, or a closely related field is required. Applicants should have extensive hands-on experience in advanced TEM/STEM, strong microstructural characterization skills, experience with high-resolution TEM and/or atomic-resolution STEM imaging, and experience preparing electron-transparent lamellae preferably by FIB. Strong knowledge of crystallography, diffraction, and defect analysis is required, along with the ability to independently design, perform, analyze, and interpret electron microscopy experiments. Experience linking microscopic structural features to processing and physical properties is expected. High motivation, scientific independence, strong problem-solving skills, and excellent written and spoken English are required. Experience with aberration-corrected TEM/STEM, advanced STEM modes, STEM-EDS/EELS, electron diffraction, quantitative image analysis, strain mapping, and semiconductor, thermoelectric, or other functional inorganic materials is highly desirable.
