About this position
The University of Brescia in Italy invites expressions of interest from prospective postdoctoral researchers and PhD students for an ERC-funded research project led by Prof. Marco Dalai. The project addresses fundamental problems in classical and quantum Shannon theory and the mathematical foundations of highly reliable communication.
Research topics include quantum Shannon theory, classical-quantum channel coding, channel capacities and error exponents, communication protocols with feedback and entanglement assistance, zero-error communication, quantum state and channel discrimination, quantum hypothesis testing, decoding under measurement constraints, and connections among classical and quantum information theory, combinatorics, graph theory, and algebraic methods.
Postdoctoral applicants should have a strong theoretical quantum information background and demonstrated independent research ability. Experience in quantum Shannon theory is welcome, although related theoretical quantum information expertise is also considered. Postdoctoral start dates are flexible, and researchers may contribute to the project’s quantum information activities and PhD supervision.
PhD applicants should have a strong background in quantum information, theoretical physics, mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field. Prior quantum Shannon theory research is not required. PhD positions are associated with doctoral programs in Information Engineering, with starts planned for April 2027 and November 2027.
Expressions of interest are accepted on a rolling basis. Postdoctoral candidates should email a CV, publication list, and brief research description to Prof. Marco Dalai. Prospective PhD students should provide a CV, detailed B.Sc. and M.Sc. transcripts, and a one-page motivation letter. Formal calls and institutional selection procedures will be announced separately. Funding is described as ERC-funded, but no stipend or tuition details are provided.
