About this position
Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a full-time Postdoctoral Appointee in AI and Computational Biology for Low-Dose Radiation Research in Lemont, Illinois, United States. The researcher will contribute to the LUCID multi-institutional program, which combines experimental biology, machine learning, and mechanistic modeling to understand how human cells respond to low-dose and low-dose-rate ionizing radiation.
The project focuses on integrating large-scale cellular imaging, Cell Painting-derived morphological features, transcriptomic data, genomic data, and other molecular measurements. Research topics include radiation-induced cellular states, dose- and time-dependent responses, single-cell heterogeneity, cellular adaptation, DNA damage responses, senescence, recovery, and long-term cellular fate.
Responsibilities include developing multimodal data-integration methods; building machine-learning, representation-learning, and foundation-model approaches; applying pathway-informed and explainable AI; evaluating robustness, uncertainty, and generalization across experiments, cell types, and exposure conditions; and comparing computational predictions with statistical and mechanistic baselines. The postdoctoral researcher will collaborate with experimental biologists and computational scientists, publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at scientific meetings, contribute to proposals and technical reports, and develop reproducible research software and workflows.
Applicants must have completed a PhD within the last 0–5 years or be nearing completion. Relevant experience in artificial intelligence, computational biology, machine learning, multimodal representation learning, and analysis of cellular imaging, transcriptomic, or genomic datasets is required. The expected hiring range is $72,879–$121,465, with comprehensive benefits. Applications should be submitted through the Argonne Careers portal under requisition 423561.
