About this position
Argonne National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to join the Materials Science Division’s Quantum States and Crystalline Matter Group in Lemont, Illinois, United States.
The project focuses on the discovery and study of novel quantum materials, particularly superconductors. The postdoctoral researcher will conduct exploratory synthesis and crystal growth of solid-state inorganic materials, including chalcogenides, pnictides, halides, hydroxides, and intermetallic compounds. Research will also include powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, single-crystal structure determination, optical spectroscopy, and magnetic and electrical property measurements to establish structure-property relationships and investigate emergent quantum phenomena.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in Physics, Materials Science, or Chemistry, generally awarded within the past five years. Relevant experience with molten-flux growth, Bridgman crystal growth, chemical vapor transport, and related synthesis methods is expected, together with practical materials characterization skills. Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration abilities are important.
This is a full-time, long-term fixed-term postdoctoral appointment requiring onsite work at Argonne National Laboratory. The expected hiring range is $72,879–$121,465, with comprehensive benefits. Candidates should apply with a CV, cover letter, and contact details for three professional references through the Argonne Careers portal.

What's required
Applicants must have a recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD, typically completed within the last 0–5 years, in Physics, Materials Science, or Chemistry. Candidates should demonstrate independent research experience in exploratory synthesis and crystal growth of novel quantum materials using methods such as molten-flux growth, Bridgman crystal growth, and chemical vapor transport. Experience with powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction, single-crystal structure determination, optical spectroscopy, and magnetic and electrical property measurements is required. Applicants should be able to collaborate effectively in an interdisciplinary team, possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, contribute to scientific publications and conference presentations, demonstrate interest in quantum materials and superconductivity, model Argonne’s core values, and be able to work onsite in Lemont, Illinois. Application materials include a CV, cover letter, and names and contact information for three professional references.
How to apply
