About this position

Argonne National Laboratory’s Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Appointee to work on superconducting qubits, superconducting circuits, and quantum sensing. The project focuses on designing, fabricating, and characterizing superconducting transmon qubits and related devices, with measurements carried out in a millikelvin dilution refrigerator.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative team working with scientists at Argonne, the University of Chicago, and partner institutions. Research activities include quantum device design, nanofabrication in CNM’s cleanroom, low-temperature quantum experiments, qubit control and measurement, and the development of reinforcement learning approaches to improve qubit performance and operation.

Academic background: recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD (within the last 0–5 years) in experimental physics, physics, engineering, or a closely related field. Strong communication skills and the ability to thrive in a collaborative research environment are required. Preferred experience includes quantum experiments, qubit control and entanglement, quantum coherence, device fabrication and characterization, microwave/optical measurement, cryogenic instrumentation, dilution refrigerator operation, and AI-assisted measurements.

Funding: this is a full-time postdoctoral position with an expected salary range of $72,879–$121,465 and comprehensive benefits.

Location: Lemont, Illinois, United States, at Argonne National Laboratory.

How to apply: submit the application through Workday and upload a CV/resume, unofficial PhD transcripts, and a PhD diploma if already awarded. Interviewed candidates will be asked for three references.

Start date: as early as Fall 2026, with flexibility for a highly qualified candidate.
