About this position

Ames National Laboratory at Iowa State University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in quantum sensing, superconducting quantum circuits, and materials/condensed-matter physics.

The project studies the microscopic origins of low-frequency (1/f) magnetic and electric noise in transmon qubits, using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond as local probes. Research topics include surface and interface spins, magnetic defects, two-level systems, trapped flux and vortex motion, nonequilibrium quasiparticles, qubit coherence, and noise spectroscopy.

The postdoc will help commission a new cryogen-free dilution refrigerator platform with confocal optical access and NV positioning, develop pulse sequences and analysis pipelines, and combine NV-based measurements with standard transmon characterization in the same cryostat and cooldown. The work also includes modeling noise spectra, numerical calculations/simulations, and interdisciplinary collaboration across quantum sensing, materials science, and quantum information science.

Eligibility: Ph.D. in experimental condensed-matter physics, applied physics, quantum science and engineering, AMO physics, materials science and engineering, or a closely related field. Strongly preferred are hands-on NV-center experience, ODMR, pulsed microwave control, confocal microscopy, shallow NV sensing, superconducting qubit or resonator experience, dilution-refrigerator/millikelvin work, cryogenic optics, and scientific programming.

Location: Ames, Iowa, United States.

Deadline: November 30, 2026.

How to apply: Submit the online application, CV, cover letter, and references through the Workday portal linked in the posting.
