About this position
Duke University is inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Associate in the DukeNLP group in the Department of Computer Science. The position focuses on natural language processing, machine learning, and reliable AI, with research directions including factual and robust language generation, long-horizon and agentic workflows, human verification of AI-generated work, and the provenance, transparency, and accountability of human-AI-produced artifacts.
The successful candidate will work with Professor Bhuwan Dhingra and the broader NLP and AI community at Duke. The role encourages intellectual ownership of projects, publication at leading NLP and machine learning venues, and the release of datasets, models, or evaluation resources. Collaboration with graduate and undergraduate students is expected, and interdisciplinary work across Duke and other institutions may be possible.
Eligibility: applicants should hold, or expect to complete before the start date, a PhD in computer science, machine learning, natural language processing, or a closely related field. Strong research experience in NLP or machine learning, empirical work with large language models, programming and experimental skills, independent research ability, and strong communication skills are required. Experience with human-centered evaluation, reinforcement learning/post-training, agentic systems, or large-scale data collection is welcome.
Funding: this is a postdoctoral appointment for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year depending on performance, continued funding, and mutual interest. No stipend amount is listed.
